Stewart's story

In 2005, life was hell.  I was about to lose my job, my home, my family.  My son who has an undiagnosed medical condition was really struggling with the shift from nursery to school.  He was suspended numerous times and nearly everyday I was contacted by the school to bring him home.  I couldn't get appropriate childcare either.  All of which made going to work impossible.

But then I found One Parent Families Scotland and their Childcare at Home service. And it sounds trite, but they really did change my and my son's lives.  It wasn't all plain sailing but they were prepared to stick at it until we got the balance of care right.  And were also prepared to meet my son's individual needs - he needs two carers at all times.  Sorting the childcare also gave us the space to sort his schooling out.  He has changed schools and things are much better there now too.  And as a lone parent having an organisation to talk to and give me support when I need it has been fantastic.

One Parent Families Scotland on their Childcare at Home services:

Childcare at Home works because it is developed around the needs of families and local communities.  By going into people's homes or creating a small secure childcare group we can provide the sort of care and support parents are looking for their child.  It makes childcare affordable and practical for lone parents, who often work shifts and in lower paid jobs.  It's exactly the kind of service many families with a disabled child are looking for."
